Michael Kenna - Eiffel Tower, Study No. 1

1. Photo draws your eye, catches your interest. This photo really caught my eye and I was immediately interested in the subject matter. I've always wanted to travel to Paris, France but this picture will have to be as close as I get for now!
2. Angle or point of view. I think what works so well in this picture is the angle Kenna used. He got nice and close and it's almost like you are engulfed into the tower.
3. Makes the viewer think or react emotionally. Although it is pretty clear what the picture is of, some viewers may have to stop and wonder what the subject is. It is taking a well-known icon of France and distorting the image to make the viewer think.
4. Has a message or pushes barriers. I think the way the lighting illuminates at the top sends a "heavenly" message. Paris seems like a heaven on earth type of place and this picture definitely conveys that.
5. The subject matter is interesting. I personally love pictures of different places around the world, so to me this picture is very interesting. The way the different parts of the structure illuminate is really cool.
6. Tells a story. I'm not sure what kind of story this conveys, other than the idea of "heaven on earth". I really like how the lighting makes you think about where the tower is going.
7. Catches the critical moments when action is at its peak. I think Kenna does a nice job of adding action to these still life landscapes. The way the lighting comes down from the sky shows action.
8. Clear focus of photo. The focus of this photo is really nice because it focuses the whole tower. The viewer can see every detailed part of the Eiffel Tower which makes for a really nice picture.
9. Design elements. I really like how the Eiffel Tower is framed in the picture. It makes you think about what the object is that is taking over the page. The curved beam that cuts through the middle of the page shows movement of the tower.
10. Lighting interesting. Again, I really like the lighting of this picture because it seems to come in from the top, but everything is illuminated nicely as well.
11. Technically proficient. Kenna is a beautiful photographer. The exposure is working because all the beams are visible and not only visible, but also perfect!
